THE MOTORCYCLE COMPANY
Beste [firtsname],
First of all, we have to say sorry for being so late with the newsletter.
Nevertheless, we wish you a happy and healthy 2002 with lots of motorcycle fun. The reason for the delay in the distribution of the newsletter is the fact that we have been busy with the preparation for the international classic oldtimer exhibition in Maastricht. Interested people from all over Europe showed up and we gained lots of new contacts. In case you haven't been there, you have missed a lot. Next year you have another chance.
of old friends and also many new lovers of classic motorcycles. Therefore we will continue organising events like this. Our next one is planned for Saturday 16 March. It will be a cafe-racer event. Two weekends earlier we invite lovers of classic endurance bikes for a get together.
Best regards,
The Motorcycle Team
Harm & Robert

3. Cafe-racer event on Saturday 16 March
=====================================================================
On Saturday 16 March we organise a cafe-racer event. Some of you might ash themselves what a cafe-racer exactly is. Well, a cafe-racer is an English classic motorbike - an AJS, Ariel, BSA, Norton or Triumph - made into a special bike with a racy look. Tritons (Triumph engine - Norton frame) and Tribsas (Triumph engine - BSA frame) were often built because people found Triumph frames not sturdy enough. All sorts of creations were made and often they had a supercool look. Complete with greasy hair and a nice chick on the buddyseat, the boys used to meet up for races round the area. The finishing was always near the village pub where the one who finished last had to buy drinks for everyone.
Cafe-racers became a huge hype and producers for special stuff supplied all sorts of gear to make bikes look special, i.e. alloy racingtanks, clip-ons, racingseats, alloy wheels, carburators, etc. Producers like Gus Kuhn, Robinson and Hyde were household names in those days. Obviously the motorcycle industry had to come with an answer to all this and launched several sportive models. Those models of course had to be made even more special by the proud owners who bought them. Brands like Seeley and Rickman became famous for the parts they supplied. The cafe-racer hype also had a big impact on the Italian motorcycle industry. Valentini for instance produced beautiful sets for the Moto Morini V-twins. When Ducati launched the 750 SS models, they launched in fact a line of street- and cafe-racers.
Even Harley Davidson had to do something and came out with the SLRC model.
The basic idea behind all this is the fact that bikers always want to be just a little different from the rest. They are real individualists in that way. Of course you can share your enthusiasm for cafe-racers with others. In Holland the ROAD ROCKET CAF RACER CLUB is very active. In case you want more info, mail to rockateer
>From this cafe-racer era, a few beautiful creations are still going strong. There are still enthusiasts out there creating beautiful stuff out of an English, Italian or Japanese (forgive me) bike. Okay, when you own a good looking cafe-racer, don't hesitate to bring it to the event. We will make it a real sixties happening for you all. In case you want to lend us your cafe-racer to put it on display in the showroom during the event, do give us a call. If you are interested in building your own, don't forget that The Motorcycle Company can supply you with almost everything you need.
